Colorful blankets, tables and chairs covered Phoenix Park’s lawn Friday, as all ages from across the city gathered to hear good music, eat delicatessens and fellowship at the city’s first ever Spring Fling.
Coordinated by Selma City Ward 1 councilwoman Susan Keith and Ward 4 councilwoman Angela Benjamin, both women said the event was a success.
“We have a nice diverse crowd, people are smiling, I think it went well for the first one,” Benjamin said. “People brought blankets, chairs, even tables … the band is fabulous … everybody gave their ideas for the next one. I love it.”
Selma resident Duncan Hope said he came to the event to offer his support to the council.
“I think it’s a good idea — I like it,” Hope said. “We need to get together and do more of these things, more often.”
Ann Gault said she attended Friday’s event to shoot the breeze.
“I just wanted to enjoy the music, the beautiful weather, location and spend time with the family,” Gault said. “It’s fun and relaxation.”
With the theme: BYOBBB, or Bring your own Blanket, Basket and Beverage, the event also showcased music from local acts such as members of Concordia College’s Gospel Choir and Concordia College Jazz Band. The St. James Hotel and Side Porch Sandwiches were also on hand.
With the park as part of Ward 8, Ward 8 councilman Corey Bowie said he feels an event of this caliber is not only beneficial to the ward but also to the city.
“I think it’s a great success whenever you have a program of this magnitude,” Bowie said.
