Residents who made a trip to Selma Mall Friday got a pleasant surprise when they saw Miss Alabama.

Scarlotte Deupree, the reigning Miss Alabama, was in town signing autographs and taking photos with admirers. Deupree was there as part of a health expo, and on behalf of her women’s and children’s literacy program.

Deupree founded the Sylacauga Adult Literacy Council when she was a senior in high school. While attending Sanford University she also became involved with the Literacy Council of Central Alabama.

Being Miss Alabama has given Deupree the ability, and the platform, to spread the word about her literacy program.

William Bowman, president of the Visually Impaired People organization, was the person

responsible for organizing and handling the expo.

Mary Beth Meggs, state coordinator for TECHNET, said &uot;members of STAR visit local community centers and schools to show people with disabilities how low-tech devices can be helpful in everyday living.&uot;

The Star program has been able to help people with disabilities for the last eight years.

The STAR program is a 10-year program that is a couple of years away from being completed, unless it can obtain further funding.

Selma High School students volunteering for Bowman’s organization were also on hand at the expo to give out information.

Roshanda Smith, a senior at Selma High, said she enjoyed her time working with the visually impaired.

During the expo, which lasted until 3p.m., tables displayed unique gadgets and technology. All the items on display could be used by the visually impaired and disabled to help assist them with the rigors of everyday life.
