Governor Don Siegelman is going to church in Selma this Sunday.

According to Rev. Charles Lett of Calvary Missionary Baptist Church,

Siegelman will be attending a function held in his honor at the church at 2:30 Sunday afternoon.

Lett said that the function will be filled with the singing of the Selma High School Choir, but will also have several speakers take their turn to offer some words to the governor.

District Attorney Ed Greene, Probate Judge Johnny Jones and State Senator Hank Sanders are among those who will be speaking at the event, Lett said. He added that the speakers would be giving short greetings to the governor.

Greene said that he has known Siegelman for several years as a private attorney, attorney general, and public officer. He added that he thought Siegelman had served well in government.

Lett said that he, however, will not be speaking Sunday.

Lett said that the beginnings of Sunday’s event started with a conversation that he had with Siegelman a couple of weeks ago. After the conversation, Lett said that the idea for an event showing appreciation for Siegelman came to him so he called back and spoke with the governor’s secretary.

After he was assured that the governor would come, Lett said, he started calling people to speak at the function.

He also said that Siegelman didn’t ask for the event to take place, though he would be speaking on Sunday.

Lett said that he regretted that Siegelman wasn’t reelected governor. He added that the governor has done a lot for the Black Belt, and that this area needs more help than any other in the state.

The event will be about an hour and a half long, Lett said, since Siegelman’s visit will be a brief one.

A member of Siegelman’s staff said that the governor will be at the church at 3 p.m. Sunday afternoon.
