It’s a day to honor those who help others, said Victor Inge, interim director of the Black Belt Chapter of the American Red Cross.

Inge said the American Red Cross will be holding a Christmas lunch on Tuesday, Dec. 17, beginning at noon.

Inge said the dinner would honor more than 40 action volunteers who have helped in different ways with the American Red Cross.

Inge said volunteers have helped with such areas as training to open and operate shelters, provided needed assistance for disaster relief, as well as honoring volunteers, who teach different types of classes.

Inge said the one thing he was most glad about was that no serious disaster has affected Selma over the past year, something, which he said all Selmians should feel fortunate about.

Inge, who was in Abbeyville two days later after a series of tornadoes struck there Nov. 5, said that he was glad that the same thing did not happen in Selma.

Inge said the lunch would be a way for volunteers to get together to commemorate all of their good deeds.

Even though the Red Cross has volunteers, Inge said that the organization could certainly use a few more.
