Crosstown Rivalry could be biggest game of the year
By Kevin Bush / Selma Times – Journal
The last week of the football regular season is upon us, and for many area teams the last week is the biggest of the year. I know in the mind of a lot of Meadowview and Morgan fans it is. This is the week that the cross town rivals hook up in the final regular season game of the year.
The historic game between the two schools has evolved into a Alabama an Auburn type of atmosphere that many people that have not lived in Selma for years really do not understand. This is the game that sometimes can make or break a season, and can give the winner the bragging rights for the year to come.
With the Trojans having been unable to put together a win this year, but the team as a whole has played good football at times, this game could make their year. If Meadowview was able to pick up the win against Morgan it would ease a lot of the players’ mind’s to what they have had to endure this year.
The Morgan Academy Senators have had a good year, and are in the play-offs no matter if they win or lose on Friday night, but the win could give them some momentum heading into the play-offs. The Senators three losses have all come by small margins, and they have been in positions to win all of these games. They are a very confident, and talented ball club if which had a few breaks go their way this year could be undefeated going into this game.
The thing about big rivalry games is that you can throw records out the window, because they don’t matter. Even the worst team can get fired up big, and play a tight game with a close rival. So down count out the Trojans just yet. It would take a mistake free perfectly played game to beat the Senators, but anything is possible. The fact that the Trjaons are a little banged up does not help matters much for the though.
The Senators have a wealth of talent on both sides of the ball, which includes a very solid backfield, and a talented quarterback. Travis Lyon has been a threat to run with the ball all year. Owen Peak and Robert Collins have been solid running backs for the Senators all year, and both have come through big in close game situations.
Whether you are first timer at the game or a veteran, everyone should check out the rivalry at least once. Meadowview plays host to Morgan Friday night at Wasden Field at 7:30.
