Sarah Mahan now stands as the Morgan Academy valedictorian for the class of 2012. She plans on attending The University of Alabama in the fall and living in the honors dorms.

“Well my major changes weekly,” Mahan said. “Last week I wanted to study education but this week I am thinking journalism, so we will see how that goes.”

Mahan said she has always made good grades and that has come fairly easily and natural to her.

Her future goal is to graduate from Alabama and then beyond that, she still has some deciding to do.

“I want to figure out where I’m supposed to be and what I’m supposed to be doing,” Mahan said.

When she is not studying, Mahan said her hobbies include running and reading, mostly realistic fiction because non-fiction, “just is not something I’m into,” she said.

Mahan said she is most looking forward to not having someone looking over her shoulder and telling her what to do at all times. However, she says she will miss the close-knit community of Morgan Academy most. She will be entering into a freshman class of more than 5,000 students.

“We have a class of 47 people, you know everyone and everyone knows you,” Mahan said.

While attending Morgan Academy Mahan ran track for the last five years, competing in the long run and two-mile events. She was also a student government class representative, a member of Beta Club, National Honors Society and Spanish Club. She also participates in Morgan Academy Christian Organization and helps out on the yearbook staff.

During Morgan’s graduation ceremony on Friday, Mahan will give her valedictorian speech on the importance of making an impact and using time wisely.
