ORRVILLE — The Keith High School Bears hosted the Selma High School Saints and the St. Jude Pirates for a jamboree football game that gave coaches one last look for the spring.
The Bears welcomed the Saints and Pirates to J.V. Caldwell Memorial Stadium on Friday, as each team played each other for two quarters.
The Bears and Pirates kicked off the jamboree, as St. Jude scored the only two touchdowns in the two quarters — one on a 2-yard run by Bryan Brower and the other on a 40-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Tony Minnifield to receiver Kendall Richardson.
Highlights for Keith in the half included a pair of goal-line stands by the Bears’ defense, as well as a sack by Ricky Jackson and a 20-yard run by Charles Johnson.
Bears’ head football coach Harry Crum said he was disappointed in the way his offense controlled the ball in the half, but there were some positives.
“I’m disappointed in the first half against St. Jude because of the number of turnovers we had — I think we had three fumbles and lost all three of them,” Crum said. “St. Jude, obviously, is well coached and extremely disciplined and will capitalize off your mistakes. We had a couple of stops on them deep in our territory and I saw some bright spots. One of the kids that really, really impressed me was Eric Young at cornerback. He made several tackles and he’s just a freshman. I saw bright spots with another young guy in Michael Irby playing defensive tackle.”
St. Jude took on the Saints in the second pair of quarters, with the Pirates scoring the only touchdown on a 35-yard pass from Minnifield to John Hawkins.
The Saints’ highlights included a 26-yard run by quarterback Jesse Harris, a sack by Ezekiel Ufomado and a fumble recovery by the Selma defense.
The jamboree closed with the Saints versus the Bears, as Selma scored the only points, including a safety and a 12-yard touchdown run by Kendarious Merchant.
A 20-yard run by running back Brandon Smith sparked the Saints in the second quarter on the touchdown drive that was followed by big runs from Charvis Woods and Adam Bruno, and Merchant’s touchdown.
Keith got big runs from Delmuss Irby and Johnson against the Saints, as well as sack from Jackson and an interception by Maurice Crumpton.
Leroy Miles, head football coach of Selma High School, said he thought his team did well overall and his team showed a lot of character on the day, especially on the scoring drive.
“I thought our performance overall was pretty good, and I think our kids showed a lot of character tonight. We’re very, very young on the offensive line and the kids relied on their strength and conditioning, and that’s how we were kind of able to move the ball down the field the last quarter,” Miles said. “I think we had more numbers than Keith and it kind of played in our favor, but I still think you can’t look at it as a win. It’s just a jamboree and we only played a half. Keith fought real hard. I think Keith’s got a great team and they showed a lot of class and our kids showed a lot of character tonight. That’s what was important and that’s what we’re trying to build the program on is character. I’m very, very proud of them and I thought they did a good job.”
Crum said he was impressed with the performances of a few young players against the Saints, and was pleased with how the Bears performed overall.
“Morris Collins, an eighth grader, made three or four good tackles against Selma High. Delmuss Irby looked really, really good carrying the ball and had a really long run that was called back,” Crum said. “I think overall, we moved the ball pretty well against Selma High, who’s a 5A ballclub and against St. Jude, who’s probably going to be in the top 10 of Class 1A. I think it was a good outing.”
