Cuttin’ Loose snips ribbon to open new salon in Selma

SELMA — A dream was realized Thursday with the opening of Cuttin’ Loose, a new, family oriented hair salon in Selma. The salon, which specializes in affordable haircuts and styling, came about through a friendship struck up several years ago between Hunter Harrelson and Dorothy Johnson, Cuttin’ Looses’ salon manager.
“I met her one time when I was getting my hair cut and she just makes you feel like you’re one of the family,” said Harrelson, who serves as the business’ financial manager. “I had always joked around with Dorothy that we could make a business with her because she’s so good at what she does.”
While Johnson may be the manager of the salon, she says the business is more of a collaboration between her and the other three stylists that make up the Cuttin’ Loose team – Victoria Poe, Sarah Biddle and Jessie Champion, who combined with Johnson, have more than 20 years experience as stylists.
“We’ve worked together for five years as a group and Jessie and I have worked together for 10 years,” Johnson said. “We always wanted to do our own thing and have our own shop together.”
Johnson said it was important to them that the atmosphere is family oriented and that the services they offer be affordable, especially during these tough economic times.
“We’re geared for the whole family,” she said, noting that the services offered include haircuts, color, perms, relaxers and waxing. “We cater more to walk-ins, but we’ll take appointments, too. We just want it to be convenient to the customer’s schedule.”
Champion said the people who visit the large salon, with its walls painted a bright teal color, will leave feeling like they’ve been visiting with a member of the family or their best friend.
“It’s a very easy going atmosphere,” she said. “People can come in and get a very affordable haircut in a fun atmosphere.”
Cuttin’ Loose is located at 210 Highland Avenue, Suite A, next to Papa John’s Pizza, and is open Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Their phone number is 875-7241.
