Future employees in the Selma City School System may soon have a more in-depth hiring process to go through.

Thursday, school board member Benjamin F. Givan proposed a process that will allow board members &uot;to have more input in the hiring of our employees.&uot;

Givan said that principals, assistant principals, football coaches, band directors and various leadership positions recommended by the superintendent should not just be approved without a face-to-face review by the board before appointment.

Fellow board members asked a number of questions about the proposal to get a clearer understanding of what types of steps or processes need to be implemented.

The board will review the proposal and it will be presented again for approval.

In other business, Selma High School may soon establish a junior varsity cheerleading squad for eligible ninth and 10th graders beginning next year. A number of adjustments for interested varsity cheerleading candidates were also made.

Board members voted unanimously to request approval of the proposal.

A controversy arose earlier this year over the ejection of two students selected to be on the squad by the school’s principal. In what board President James E. Ware categorized as &uot;overstepping their position,&uot; board members meticulously outlined the qualifications of all students permitted on the squad, how they are selected, parental involvement, and the policy and procedures involved in the selection process. The proposal will be presented in writing at a later date.

The proposal also addressed details concerning the channeling of funds collected from both the junior varsity and varsity squads.
