Hornets blow out Red Devils

MAPLESVILLE &045;&045; After a three-year hiatus Dallas County and Maplesville renewed their county line rivalry Friday night, with a game Maplesville would rather soon forget.

In front of what could be considered a sell out at Dallas County racked up 555 yards of total offense en route to a 59-13 win.

As for Maplesville head coach Dirk Strunk this loss has to be put aside in preparations for next week’s regional opener.

Dallas County’s running back Clifford Lyons was the offensive star of the night, racking up 196 yards and three rushing touchdowns on just six carries. He also accounted for 110 yards receiving and another two touchdowns.

The Hornets scored on their first five possessions of the night and six of their possessions of the first half.

Lyons scored the first of his five touchdowns on a 33-yard run with 9:35 left in the first quarter. After Dallas County recovered a Maplesville fumble on their first offensive series, Lyons again scored, this time from 16-yards out.

The lone Maplesville score came with 5:23 left in the first quarter on a 2-yard run up the middle by quarterback Chad Gibson. Gibson’s extra point was good, giving Maplesville their first points of the night and closing the score to 14-7.

The score came on a 6-play, 65-yard drive that showed the running strength of the Red Devils.

Dallas County extended their 38-7 halftime lead on their first drive of the second half, going 93 yards on seven plays for the score. Lyons again scored, this time taking a Donovan Dixon pass and weaving his way through the Red Devil defense for a 40-yard touchdown with 7:51 left in the third quarter.

Dallas County scored again five minutes later on a 26-yard touchdown run by James Jones, Jr.
