Catherine Smith

Catherine Smith, 82, of Selma, died Wednesday August 11, 2004, at a local nursing home.

Services are at 1 p.m. Friday, August 13, at the Chapel of Lawrence Funeral Home with the Rev. Tommy Fancher officiating. Burial will follow in Pineview Cemetery with Lawrence Funeral Home directing.

Survivors include sons, Jeff (Lynn) Smith and Mike McNeal; daughter, Barbara (Carl)

Tucker; sisters, Elizabeth Williams and Betty Docker; grandchildren, Kathy (Tim) Harrison, Michael McNeal II, Andy (Angelia) McNeal, Lisa McCloud and Christy (P.J.) Baines.

Mrs. Smith was preceded in death by one daughter, Evon McCloud, sister, Margaret Twiley and brothers, Bob, Ralph, Herbert, W.T., Oscar and Melvin Daffron.

Rickey Ferrell and Denny Ferrell.

Frank Bumpers

Frank Bumpers, 66, of Selma, died Friday, August 6, 2004, at a local hospital.

Services are at 2 p.m. Saturday, August 14, at Freewill Holiness Church with Elder Jerry Holman officiating. Burial will follow in Fairlawn Memory Gardens Cemetery with J.H. Williams and Sons Funeral Home directing.

Survivors include three daughters, Min. Shanetta (Jerry) Holman, Angela Bumpers and Tina Denise Bumpers all of Selma; one brother, Jessie (Sally) Bumpers of Beldon, Texas; three sisters, Louise Cox of Los Angeles, Calif., Rosie King of Mobile and Martha Turner of Bellwood, Ill.; two grandchildren; two brothers-in-law; one sister-in-law; nieces, nephews, other relatives; and goddaughter, Gloria (James) Burke.

Mr. Bumpers was born on July 10, 1938 in Coffeeville, to the late Willie and Minnie Cox Bumpers. He was a member of Church of God in Christ in Mobile before moving to Selma in 1963. He was married to the late Mattie Holloway Bumpers of Dallas County. He was honorable discharged from the United States Army in 1961. He was a truck driver by profession.

Dorothy Mae Kenney

Dorothy Mae Kenney, 33, of Marion Jct., died Friday, August 6, 2004, at a local hospital.

Services are at 1 p.m. Saturday, August 14, at Eagle Grove Baptist Church in Marion Jct., with the Rev. Bailey Dawson officiating. Burial will follow in Woodlawn Cemetery in Uniontown, with Miller Funeral Home directing.

Survivors include parents, Betty Jean Kenney and Charles Mitchell; one brother, Charles D. Mitchell; three sisters, Carolyn Faye Kenney, Vertonya Mitchell and Vernita Mitchell; four nephews, Zachary Napoleon Kenney, Jaylen Cato, Cameron Mitchell and Daequan Mitchell; one niece, Dechira Mitchell.

Active pallbearers are Kevin Smith, Vincent Thomas, Willie Thomas, Charles Kimbrough, Alex Thomas, Norah Kenney and Michael Thomas.

Family visitation will be from 7-8 p.m. on Friday, at the funeral home.

Infant James E. Smiley Crear

Infant James E. Smiley Crear, died Tuesday, August 10, 2004 at a local hospital.

Graveside services are at 2 p.m.. Saturday, August 14, at Mt. Zion Baptist Church Cemetery with the Rev. Burt Scott officiating and J.H. Williams and Sons Funeral Home directing.

Survivors include parents, Vickey D. Crear and James E. Smiley.

Samuel Pilgrome

Samuel Pilgrome, 55, of Orrville, died Thursday, August 5, 2004.

Services are at 2 p.m. Saturday, August 14, at the Chapel of Miller Funeral Home. Burial will follow in New Bethel Cemetery with Miller Funeral Home directing.

Alma Jean Simmons

Alma Jean Simmons, 47, of Selma, died Wednesday, August 11, 2004, in Selma.

Services are at 1:30 p.m. Sunday, August 15, at Mt. Olive #2 Baptist Church in Sardis, with the Rev. Jones officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

Survivors include three sons, Robert Peterson, Marcus Simmons and Frederick Simmons; one daughter, Teasha Simmons; five brothers, Jackie, Robert, Collin, Cecil and Gerome; 10 sisters, including Gracie and Jackie Bell; eight grandchildren; one sister-in-law.

Active pallbearers are Robert Peterson, Marcus Simmons, Frederick Simmons, Terrell Rueben, Darius Walker and Christopher Carter.

David L. Swift

David L. Swift, 55, of Selma, died Monday, August 9, 2004, in Meridian, Miss.

Memorial services are at 11 a.m. Saturday, August 14, at Reformed Presbyterian Church with Pastor Joseph officiating and Walker Mortuary directing.

Survivors include one daughter, Natalie L. Swift; two brothers, Ernest and Samuel Swift; three sisters, Carrie B. Jones (Massey), Elizabeth H. Malone and Mary Williams; two brothers-in-law; one sister-in-law; and a host of nieces, nephews and other relatives.

Honorary pallbearers are Class of 1966.

Mr. Swift was a graduate of R.B. Hudson High School Class of 1966. He was a graduate of Knoxville College in Knoxwille, Tenn., fellowship Duke University in N. C., member of Omega PHI-PHI fraternity Inc., and was supervisor for the County of Cleveland -custodial.

Henry Benjamin Phillips

Henry Benjamin Phillips, 71, of Newbern, died Wednesday, August 11, 2004, at a Tuscaloosa hospital.

Services are at 11 a.m., Saturday, August 14, at Hobson Bethel United Methodist Church with the Rev. James L. Waters Jr. officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery with Kirk Funeral Homes Greensboro Chapel directing.

Survivors include one son, Henry Benjamin Phillips Jr.; three daughters, Deborah Phillips Taylor of Port St. Joe, Fla., Donna Phillips Averette of Tuscaloosa and Lynn Phillips Milner of Newbern; two brothers, Uriah Phillips Jr. of Louisiana and David Phillips of Tuscaloosa; one sister, Delores Dryden of Greensboro, N.C.; seven grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Joyce S. Phillips.

Jessie Lou Edwards

Jessie Lou Edwards, 90, of Autauga County, died Monday, August 9, 2004, at her home.

Services are at 1 p.m. Saturday, August 14, at New Salem Baptist Church with the Rev. Felton E. Henderson officiating. Burial will follow in Harris Cemetery in Jones, with Miller Funeral Hone directing.

Survivors include four sons, Booker Edwards Jr., Willie James Edwards, Calvin Lewis Edwards and Adolph Edwards; six daughters, Essie Mae Parker, Lola Bell Tyus, Flora Bell McCary, Dorothy Ann Edwards, Glora Lee Cutler and Inez Cutler; three brothers, Pet Ford Hatcher, Lynn Hatcher and Otis Hatcher; three sisters, Josie Tripp, Mary Ella Parker and Kay Lee Tripp; 69 grandchildren; 99 great-grandchildren; 105 great-great-grandchildren; two sons-in-law; one daughter-in-law; two brothers-in-law; six sisters-in-law; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Booker T. Edwards Sr.

Edna Shedd Wyatt, died Monday, August 9, 2004, at a senior residence in Mobile.

Graveside services are at 2 p.m. Saturday, August 14, at New Live Oak Cemetery in Selma with Radney Funeral Home of Mobile directing.

Survivors include many nieces and nephews including Otis J. Shedd of Prattville, Natalie Smith of Selma, Harold Shedd of Ozark, Ark., Danny Shedd of Searcy, Ark., Betty G. Wyles of Monticello, Ark, Earl Booker of Junction, Texas, Marie Pacheco of Junction Texas, Wayne Booker of Port Neches, Texas, John W. Booker of Houston, Texas, Gloria Conway of Colorado Springs, Colo., Earline Williams, Ronald Gaylor and Kenneth Gaylor all of Sand Springs, Okla.

She was preceded in death her loving husbands, Dewit Worrell and Charles Wyatt.

Mrs. Wyatt was born on June 11, 1916 in Selma.
