Jamie Wallace, head of the Selma-Dallas County Chamber Commerce, and John Barnes, manager of the Selma Social Security Office, are both members of the advisory board for RSVP, a federal and state funded program which serves senior citizens 60 years of age and over in Dallas County.

The program not only allows seniors to volunteer with different agencies in the county, but also provides various services to seniors.

“Preparing wills, avoiding scams, educational programs for seniors, health screening, and nutritional advice” are just some of the programs that are offered, said Barnes.

The program, they said, currently enrolls 200 seniors.

“Our seniors are our fastest growing” population nationwide, said Barnes, noting that much of the baby boom generation is slowly creeping towards age 60 and over.

Added Wallace, “There is definitely a great need in the county for this program. It is something, which will help get more of our seniors out of their houses and interacting more with people day to day.”

Barnes said the program has accepted seniors from all walks of life, including “retired preachers, farmers, former school teachers — just about everyone.”

Applications for the job position, said Wallace, will be accepted until 4:30 p.m. on July 22, 2002, and can be dropped off at the Dallas County Courthouse Annex on Church Street.

To find out how to become part of the program one can contact the RSVP office at 874-2514.
