People have asked when they were going to rebuild Captain D’s and now those questions have been answered.

Advantage Concrete of Selma is currently laying the foundation for the new 2000 square foot structure that will be the site for the new Captain D’s. The old Captain D’s caught on fire this Spring, resulting in a total loss for the owner, Rich Henry, formerly of Selma.

Work crews began clearing the land and pouring the foundation about 8 weeks ago. On Tuesday, construction workers were busy pouring concrete in the footings, which will create a strong foundation, explained Burk Kynard.

Kynard said the company has been contracted to lay the foundation, form the slabs, curbs and sidewalk for the building. The building is expected to be completed in 3 to 4 months.

“We usually get a lot of negative news about Selma. This is something positive. The new Captain D’s will be bigger and better. It will have a drive through also,” Kynard said. “It’s nice to know someone thought enough to put all this money in this project. I know people will be glad to come back to Captain D’s.”

The restaurant is not the only one that’s undergone construction. Russell Construction of Alabama, Inc. has completed construction of the new Mr. Waffle, located on Highway 80 W. next to Cross Roads Exxon.

The building is bigger than the Mr. Waffle, located next to Captain D’s. The owners, Tony and Joann Butts said they will not close the old Mr. Waffle, explaining people are creatures of habit.

“Mr. Waffle has been open for 25 years. We have a regulars like Coach Reese and Dr. Cross, who I don’t think will change over to the new Mr. Waffle. The new restaurant is to attract not only truck drivers, but travelers and people who do not want to go to the old restaurant,” said Joann Butts.

Butts said the new restaurant will open in 2 weeks. Another positive side to the business is that it will employ 15 new people, who Butts has already hired.

“Kevin Jones and Rosa Richardson will remain at the old Mr. Waffle. They have been with us for years and people like them,” Butts said.

Once the Captain D’s is built, Butts plans to repave the parking lot of Mr. Waffle to blend in with the new structure.

She said she welcomes the new Captain D’s, and historically, both owners have gotten along well and helped each other out at times.

Butts also wants patrons to know that Graystone Restaurant will no longer be open on Sundays. The restaurant is already closed on Mondays. Starting July 16, Graystone will open from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m., Tuesday through Saturday.
