Estelle McCarthy

Estelle Routree McCarthy died at dawn on Easter Sunday April 4, 2010. McCarthy is survived by husband Charles R. McCarthy; her sister, Mattie Moore Rountree Barr (Richard); nieces, Leah Iglehart (Michael and Elizabeth West (Mike), Rachel Getman; nephews, James Richard Barr (Suzanne) and Robert M. Rountree IV.
She was preceded in death by a sister, Beba Rountree and a brother Bob Rountree III. Ms. McCarthy was born August 12,1930 in Valley Grande, Alabama, the daughter of Robert Morrison Rountree Jr. and Onzie Hardy Rountree.
She graduated from Judson College in Marion, Alabama where she served as president of her class for four years.
She later graduated from Union Presbyterian Seminary.
Ms. McCarthy was the author of the book “ Valley Creek Presbyterian Church, Her Life and Times 1817-2002”.
She co-authored a book with her husband Charlie, “The Power Picture”.
Among Ms. McCarthy’s accomplishments were: The Margaret Walker Bowden Award for Distinguished Service in Christian Education, Educator of the Year in Christian Education- St. Andrews College, General Assembly Task Force, a grant for research from the Lilly Endowment, a position with Presbytery Staff in Washington, D.C., and she co-authored several books.
Graveside services will be conducted by Reverend Cecil Williamson at 1:30 p.m. on April 17, 2010, at Valley Creek Presbyterian Church Cemetery, Selma, Alabama near the family will be at the church after the service.
