The Rev. Fred Zeigler called his emotions “bittersweet” as he prepares to preach his last sermon as pastor of Church Street United Methodist Church on Sunday.
After 42 years in the ministry, the last five of which came at Church Street United Methodist, Zeigler has decided to retire from active ministry.
“I’ll miss the fellowship with the people and the community the most,” Zeigler said. “They’ve taught me that you can call on them and they will respond. They are very dedicated people.”
Although Zeigler said he plans to enjoy all the perks that come with retirement, especially golf and spending time with his family, he probably hasn’t preached his last sermon.
The Montgomery-native plans to move and return to his home church, First United Methodist Church Montgomery.
“It’s been a wonderful five years with the folks in Selma, and I do look forward to the future, but I hate to leave the fine people there that have been so helpful to me and also responsive to the ministry,” he said.
Zeigler earned a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology/ Sociology from Tennessee Wesleyan College, and furthered his education at the Candler School of Theology of Emory University, where he earned the Master of Divinity degree.
To his Selma congregation, Zeigler said he was grateful for the memories they shared during his time in Selma.
“I hope they continue to share their hospitality and welcome to everybody,” Zeigler said. “And that they all just continue to be themselves.”
