SELMA — Former college quarterbacks Ben Leard of Auburn and Tyler Watts of Alabama plan to have a good time Monday when they open the 2009 edition of the Selma Quarterback Club.
The first meeting will be at 6 p.m. at the Taltons’ Riverhouse.
Both former quarterbacks are now in the insurance business — Leard for J. Smith Lanier in Auburn and Watts at Nationwide in Vestavia Hills.
Leard, who said he was looking forward to the Quarterback Club meeting, said he was at Auburn in 1999 when Watts as a freshman came in to lead the Crimson Tide to its first victory over Auburn in Jordan Hare Stadium.
“They beat us, then we returned the favor there,” Leard said, who became the full-season starter at Auburn in 2000.
Leard said he is “very familiar” with Selma, having hunted in area with Dallas County friends west of town.
Watts has the advantage of discussing the No. 4-ranked Crimson Tide, Leard said.
“It’s a good thing we’ll have a couple of games under our belts,” he said.
As far as the rankings are concerned, Watts said he doesn’t pay much attention to them.
“If something happens, like the injury bug, it could make it that much more difficult to keep that ranking,” he said.
Watts is also a color analyst for CSS TV. He was freshman All-SEC, team captain for two years and a four-time Academic All-SEC.
Leard was a three-year starter for the Tigers and ranks fifth on the school’s career-record list with 359 completions of 592 passes.
