Selmians who have traveled the Cahaba Road near Miller Lumber Company, especially in the late spring, will best remember Idell for her beautiful hillside yard of pink, red and purple flowers. Idell remained an avid gardener up to her final days, where even at 93, sometimes her children would catch her pulling weeds or planting flowers. Idell and her husband operated Hatfield Grocery near Miller Lumber Company and the old Cigar Village until the early seventies, where sometimes it was standing room only after the word quickly spread that Idell made the best cakes and barbeque sandwiches and her husband specialized in Selma’s original bacon-wrapped filets, which many try to duplicate even to this day. The family would like to extend a very special thank you to Drs. Howell, Brignac, Burns, Knight, Newton and Foster and to the wonderful nursing staff on the 2nd and 3rd floor at Vaughan Regional Medical Center.
