They say to drive for show and putt for dough, but one organization in town is recruiting golfers to tee-off in hopes of saving lives of those not yet born.

The Selma-Dallas County Sav-A-Life organization will hold its fifth annual golf tournament on Saturday, Aug. 25 at Valley Grande Golf Course and organizers said registration is now open.

The three-man scramble tournament raises funds for the local Sav-A-Life in addition to the Walk For Life event they hold every spring.

“We raised $6,000 last year and we would like to raise about $7,000 for this year,” Executive Director of Selma-Dallas County Sav-A-Life, Jennifer Dobbs said.

She said she would like to encourage those interested to sign up now because last year the tournament was full.

“Last year we had 25 teams and we got full pretty quick and we actually had to turn people away,” Dobbs said. “So we need people to go ahead and sign up to make sure that they get their spot.”

The tournament costs $50 per person or $100 per team. Check in begins at 8 a.m. the day of the tournament and tee-off will be at 9 a.m. at Valley Grande. All proceeds go directly to Sav-A-Life, which only receives funding through fundraisers.

“This cause helps our community because it helps us offer free services for those in need in our community and it gives them life options,” Dobbs said. “We receive no state or government funding so we rely solely these fundraisers to keep us going.”

The organization offers services and counseling to families facing a pregnancy crisis, all free of charge. In addition to offering free pregnancy testing, they will have an abstinence program in the area schools this fall and parenting classes along with bible studies and nutrition classes. Selma-Dallas County Sav-A-Life most recently started a ministry for men, Dobbs said, helping them become leaders in their household and better fathers and husbands.
