Selma’s downtown entertainment district was rattled once again with gunshots late Monday night. And again, another life was lost.
Shortly after 10 p.m. Monday, shots were reportedly fired near a club on the 1200 block of Alabama Avenue. Officers with the Selma Police Department, along with deputies from the Dallas County Sheriff’s Department, quickly responded.
After they arrived in the area, officers observed an individual running from the area. The individual, 37-year-old Darrie Dewayne Dees, was stopped, found to be armed and taken into custody.
According to Lt. Johnny King, commander of the Selma Police Department’s Criminal Investigation Division, officers — during their patrols in the area — also discovered that a 25-year-old Selma man had been shot at the location and had been taken to Vaughan Regional Medical Center by the time officers arrived.
That victim, who reportedly had been shot “multiple times,” was later pronounced dead at the hospital.
King said Dees was charged with murder and placed in the Dallas County Jail.
Tuesday, a bond of $5 million was placed on Dees and more charges were filed.
Authorities added a charge of person forbidden to possess a firearm and unlawful possession of a controlled substance.
The two new charges carried with them an additional $275,000 in bonds, giving Dees a total bond of $5.275 million.
King said the investigation continues into the events surrounding the shooting and did not release details on the number of gunshots suffered by the victim, who remains unidentified. He also did not provide information on the weapon used.
King did say early investigation showed the shooting stemmed from an argument between Dees and the victim.
