SELMA — Malcolm Riley got a chance to play with some of the best basketball players Alabama has to offer, and he thinks he’s become a better player because of it.

“It’s an honor to play with them,” Riley said. “It definitely makes me more motivated to work harder.”

Riley, a member of Selma High School’s basketball team, was a part of the South All-Star team in Thursday’s night’s AHSAA All-Star game. He scored 10 points, grabbed six rebounds and had five steals in the game, but the South lost 86-81.

“It was just like any other game,” Riley said. “I was real nervous when it started, but after I got my first shot and made my first turnover it was like any other game.”

Riley got in early foul trouble and Selma coach Woodie Jackson said he played a little tentative, but had a good game overall.

“It’s a good measuring stick,” Jackson said. “You might be the best in your own back yard, but when you venture out and play against better teams you might see you aren’t doing so good. You see that you need to step your game and work harder.”
