After a 23-18 loss in Charlotte, N.C. against Johnson C. Smith on Saturday, the Concordia College Alabama Hornets will look to rebound and get back on track this weekend.
The Hornets (1-1) are trying to right the ship when they head to Atlanta to play the Clark-Atlanta Panthers (1-2) at 6 p.m. on Saturday.
Shepherd Skanes, head football coach of Concordia College, said the Hornets just didn’t take advantage of Johnson C. Smith’s mistakes during last Saturday’s game, citing turnovers as damaging to Concordia in the loss.
“We just couldn’t capitalize when we needed to,” Skanes said. “We made two turnovers. Threw two interceptions at a crucial point of the game.”
The Hornets’ offense gained 265 total yards on Saturday, with scoring plays coming on a 61-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Keith Ray to David Hampton in the first quarter, and a pair of short rushing touchdowns by Terrell Edwards-May in the second quarter.
But Skanes said he’ll be looking to make some adjustments on the offensive side of the ball before Saturday’s matchup against the Panthers.
“I’m going to simplify everything,” Skanes said. “We feel like if we simplify it, the kids will be able to pick up and move things much quicker.”
Skanes added one thing the Hornets will be doing in practice is trying to get back to their regular preparation routine.
“One thing you try to do is, basically, don’t get out of your routine,” Skanes said. “Whatever the routine is that we’ve been doing, we need to get back to the same routine, stay focused, stay humble and try to get the guys more prepared in their routine than what we did.”
