Selma High School almost finished

The new Selma High School main building is complete, but contractors and workers say there are several projects and loose ends to tie before they can call it complete.

Although the main building on the new Selma High School campus is complete, progress is still being made in other areas of the property.

Ray Mathiews, Selma City Schools director of operations, said all construction should be complete by Nov. 1.

“The main project, the main building, is finished,” Mathiews said. “And so what is happening now is the site work.”

Mathiews said two projects remain underway: the construction of three parking lots and the completion of a storm system near the back of the property.

And with any large-scale construction project, there are going to be a few minor bumps along the way, Mathiews said.

“There was a small sewage problem, but I think we got it handled,” Mathiews said Tuesday. “When you have a new school with all new plumbing and funnel it into an existing sewer system, sometimes you can run in to issues, but we think we have the problem solved.”

He added that this issue has happened before, and on-site workers have been working diligently to address it.

“What they’re doing now is they’re going to go through and jet out the whole system,” Mathiews said, adding that the problem should be taken care of by Wednesday.

Other than that issue, Mathiews said all other aspects of construction have been moving smoothly.

Four buildings are being renovated behind the school, Mathiews said. So far, one is completed.

“We expect two more of the buildings to be finished in about a week to ten days,” he said. “And then the fourth building to be finished in probably 30 days.”

A new field house, used primarily for football, should be completed in about five weeks. There are also two mounds of dirt scheduled to be hauled from the property.

“Everything has been going pretty well,” Mathiews added. “You’re going to have small issues come up from time to time, but the project over all is going pretty well.”
