The Salvation Army Selma Thrift Store has closed.

Advisory Board Chairman Leith Wilson said in a statement because the store is losing money, the Salvation Army Advisory Board believes a better use of money would be to serve the needs of the community through the Army’s emergency social service programs.

“For over 100 years the community has depended on The Salvation Army to meet the needs of the less fortunate,” Wilson said in the prepared statement, “in this economic climate it is not financially responsible to continue operations that cannot be self-sustaining. Selma is the store we are having to close since it has not been able to generate revenue to support the ongoing services of The Salvation Army.”

The store served as an extension and financial support mechanism for the social service programs of The Salvation Army.

The Demopolis Thrift store remains open. It will be expanded to meet the needs of the Black Belt area, Wilson said.
