Approaching Saturday’s 5K with a little dread

After many morning jogs and a few trips to the Selma-Dallas County YMCA, I can now say I am almost ready for the Integrity Worldwide 5K Run for Kenya.
Now I have to admit, this will be my first 5K and running has never exactly been my forte. Sometimes I actually have to look down and check that I don’t have two left feet. So, as the big day approaches, I have mixed emotions of excitement and yes, a little dread.
However, after speaking with Integrity Worldwide’s Averee and Alan Hicks I have been reminded that although I may be in the last group to cross the finish line, the day is much bigger than a race.
By participating in the 5K Run for Kenya or the one mile Fun-Run, I, and the others joining me, are helping countless people overseas who are less fortunate.
It’s amazing to think that a group of people in Selma can have such a large impact on a group of individuals who desperately need the attention.
Every time I speak with Averee or Alan, who have both been working tirelessly to make sure the day is a success, their excitement is audible and it is apparent they are passionate about the work going on in Kenya.
Also, this year many of the race participants have actually been to Kenya and supported Integrity Worldwide in its mission to make a difference.
While speaking with Alan, he said he couldn’t be more excited for Saturday and expects it to be the largest turnout yet for the run.
This is the third year the non-profit organization has hosted the event, and Alan said all the proceeds will go toward families in Kenya who have been affected by the worst drought in Kenya’s history.
Hopefully, Alan said, more than 300 people will show up Saturday to run the race.
So, as I strap on my new tennis shoes and embark on my first 5K, I know however fast or slow my pace, I will be participating in a worthwhile cause that will benefit countless individuals, and that’s a great feeling.
Race day registration will begin at 8 a.m. at Bloch Park and the race will begin at 9 a.m. Cost is $25 for adults and $15 for children age 12 and younger. You can also register by calling (334) 526-1238 or visiting www.integrityworldwide.com.
