MONTGOMERY — Hannah Murray, 14, likes to peruse art museums, such as the Montgomery Museum of Fine Arts, but she didn’t imagine her two of her paintings would display there.

She and 10 John T. Morgan Academy students will showcase their in the “Sensation Still Life” exhibit in the ARTWORKS Corridor of the museum until Oct. 10.

“I was really honored just to have stuff in there,” Hannah said. “I really do like art a lot. I practice drawing a lot, probably sometimes when I shouldn’t be drawing.”

The museum displays student work to complement the theme of the temporary exhibition, such as the current exhibit, “Objects of Wonder: Four Centuries of Still Life from the Norton Museum of Art.”

All entries are still life images, paintings of inanimate objects.

Hannah entered two pieces, a watercolor painting of lemons and an acrylic painting of golden apples in a copper bowl.

Alice Novak, assistant curator of education, incorporates student work into the museum because she believes parents and students are a vital part of the museum community.

“It’s important to us to inspire arts-making,” Novak said. “We want to encourage young people to use their own creative expression.”

Cam Walker, Morgan art teacher, entered about 30 pieces from her students. The museum chose 12 of these for a 45-piece exhibit. Student paintings were selected from more than 100 entries from schools in Central Alabama.

“It’s an honor to have your art work at the museum. The museum really gets a lot of traffic,” Walker said. “We try to one [contest] a year. Sometimes we can fit in more than that.”

Student Jillian Stewart, 14, entered a still life acrylic painting of apples and pears on a table. She was surprised and pleased it was chosen.

“It’s really cool to have a painting in a museum because I’ve never had one be in an exhibit there,” Jillian said. “I didn’t think it was that good, but apparently so.”

The museum accepted one piece of art from Natalie Oslund, Allen Todd, Emily McDaniel, Willis Watt Jones, J.R. Wood, Natalie Henry, McKenzie Strother, Emily Burns, Jillian Stewart, Charlie Ammons and two pieces from Hannah Murray for the exhibit.

The traveling exhibit contains the work of artists such as Henri Matisse, Georgia O’Keeffe, Andy Warhol, Gustave Courbet, Edward Weston and Claes Oldenburg.

The Montgomery Museum of Fine Arts is open from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m., Tuesday through Saturdays, with extended hours until 9 p.m. on Thursdays and from noon until 5 p.m. on Sundays. Admission is free.
