Selma has been blessed with a rich history. Not only have we been blessed with historical sites and occurrences, but also we have people here who advocate for our history.

People like the Selma-Dallas County Historic Preservation Society, and other individuals who are so invested in our history, so that not only we, but also the future generations can enjoy and learn from our past.

One such historic site is Kenan’s Mill.

“It’s very close to Selma, but when you’re out there, you feel like you’re way far away, out in the country or something,” said Sylvia Smith, the 2012 Kenan’s Mill chairman for the Selma-Dallas County Historic Preservation Society.

The mill was built around 1863 and on Saturday, Nov. 3 people will have a chance to not only escape into the country for the afternoon, but they will be able to explore the historic grounds and actually see the mill in action.

The Kenan’s Mill Fall Festival will provide guests with a day of fun and educational experiences. People will be able to see corn be stone-ground into cornmeal, and they can even buy a souvenir bag to enjoy at home.

The festival will also bring blue grass bands from around the state to entertain guests of all ages. A fall festival wouldn’t be complete without apple cider and hayrides, so you can bet that those will be there too.

For $5 (children under 12 get in free) you can experience history, learn something new, eat some local fare and relax to some blue grass jams out in the country.

Children who attend the festival can enjoy the Selma Fire Department’s Fire Safety Jump House and the little train from Old Mac’s Farm from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

There will be barbecue, chili, hot dogs, Hoppin’ John, cornbread, hot and cold beverages as well as multiple sides and sweets.

Not many cities have such a treasure in their back yard, but Kenan’s Mill is truly a historic landmark that everyone should experience and enjoy.

We are so privileged to have access to such a site, and we applaud the historic preservation society for keeping the mill a shining gem we can all enjoy for years to come.
