The Occupational Safety and Health Administration confirmed Tuesday it was investigating the death of an employee at Globe Metallurgical Inc.

Selma resident Marvin Bennett, 46, was confirmed dead Friday evening after what is being described as “an occupational related accident.”

“We discovered [Bennett] was deceased, and now we’re conducting an investigation to find out what happened to make sure there was no foul play,” said Lt. Johnny King, investigator with the Selma Police Department, who is also investigating the fatality.

King said he received a call Friday evening that there was an on-site accident at Globe, which is located at 2401 Old Montgomery Road.

After discovering that Bennett had died, King said the body was sent to the Alabama Forensics Department in Montgomery to determine the exact cause of death.

King did confirm, however, that the incident was an occupational related fatality and he suspects that no foul play was involved.

Joseph Roesler, area director for OSHA, said it could take up to six months to confirm the cause of death.

“Right now it’s an open investigation and really we have no information [to give to the public] because we still have people out there doing the work,” Roesler said. “I have nothing else to report at this time.”

The Times-Journal requested a comment from officials with Globe Metallurgical throughout the week. The company has chosen not to respond to those requests.

Funeral services for Bennett will be Saturday, Nov. 3 at 1 p.m. at West Trinity Baptist Church. Additional arrangements will be announced later by Melvin Miller Funeral Service in Marion.
