While their opponent backed out, it didn’t stop the Concordia College Alabama Hornets from hitting the field on Saturday afternoon.
The Hornets were scheduled to play Favor College of Memphis for their homecoming game on Saturday at Memorial Stadium, but instead scrimmaged for four quarters after Favor backed out.
Don Lee, head football coach of Concordia College Alabama, said opponents backing out is becoming a trend in tough financial times.
“We’ve had two opponents, really three [back out]. We had New Orleans set for us and Point University, they backed out, then this other college out of Memphis backed out,” Lee said. “They just said they didn’t have any funds. The economy’s killing a lot of teams, but I just wish I would have known before 9:30 this morning.”
The Hornets split into two teams according to jersey color, with the black team winning over the white team 20-6.
Running back Terrell Edwards-May scored on rushing and receiving touchdowns for the black team, while Stephan McCord recovered a fumble and returned it for a touchdown.
Christopher Davidson ran in a touchdown for the white team.
Despite Favor backing out, Lee said the festivities and the atmosphere of the Hornets’ homecoming is something to be proud of.
“It’s exciting to be able to pull up here and see a homecoming and we have vendors outside, we had a really good parade,” Lee said. “It’s probably one of the best ones I’ve seen, just wish we would have been able to give them a game. That’s the only bad thing.”
