Those enjoying themselves at the Downtown Sports Bar reportedly had to run for cover early Saturday morning as a man opened fire on the club just moments after being kicked out.
According to Selma Chief of Police William T. Riley, the shooting happened shortly before 3 a.m. Saturday at Downtown Sports Bar, located at 1122 Water Avenue.
“The suspect — 21-year-old Amorian Smith — was removed from the bar by security guards. He then went to his car, got a gun and then came back,” Riley said. “He then started shooting, firing from the street into the bar.”
Riley said at that point, a bar security guard inside the bar returned fire, hitting the suspect twice, once in the chest. After being shot, Smith fell to the ground outside the club.
“The suspect was transported to hospital in Montgomery and remains in critical condition,” Riley said.
He added investigators did recover the suspect’s handgun at the scene, but did not release any details on the caliber of the weapon or the number of shots fired.
“At this point the investigation is still ongoing,” Riley said. “At this point, we are not taking any action against the club. Initially, we believe they have done everything that we have asked of our club owners; they kicked this individual out after an altercation took place.”
