The Selma Dixie Majors All-Stars dropped their second game in as many days Saturday when host team Thomasville grabbed a 5-0 first-inning lead en route to a 12-3 victory in the South State tournament.

Selma fought and scratched for its three runs, but mistakes and the lack of timely offense killed its chances.

“We were beating ourselves,” Selma head coach Murray Austin said about the four errors and six hits in the game. “We have no patience at the plate. The kids don’t understand what patience is.”

The lack of hitting was glaring at the top of the Selma order. The first four batters went a combined 0-for-14 in the game. Six men were left on base in the seven innings.

“That’s how you lose momentum,” Austin said.

Pitching woes have also hit Selma. Five pitchers saw action Saturday, with Richard Long seeing the most productive action. He allowed three runs (one earned) in three innings, allowing three hits and striking out two.

Long helped himself at the plate with a 2-for-3 day (a single and a double) with one RBI. Johnny Watts went 2-for-2, both singles. Ron Frith and J.R. Lowe each singled.

For Thomasville, Reed Bozeman — who pitched in relief — went 3-for-4 at the plate with three RBIs. Paul Noble was 2-for-3 with two RBIS, while Shack Jackson had a double and a single in five at-bats.

Selma plays a doubleheader today to end the three-day event. At 11 a.m., Selma goes against Auburn, then comes back for a 7 p.m. game with the L.A. (Lower Alabama) Dodgers.
