The Delta Pi Lambda Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. will host a half-day workshop on Saturday, Oct. 9 for local young men on preventing teen pregnancy.

The “man-to-man” conference will be held at Ellwood Christian Academy, 1 Bell Road, Selma, from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.

The conference is free and open to all teen males between the ages of 13 and 17. Because of the sensitive nature of the materials being presented, all young men must have a signed consent form. Forms can be picked up at the principal’s office at their school or church, or they can call 309-6404.

All completed forms must be turned in to their Principal’s office or mailed to the address on the form not later than Monday, Sept. 27. No one under 18 will be admitted without this form.

Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. is the oldest predominately African-American fraternity in the country. It focuses on academics and community service. Because of the many problems affecting young men and the teen pregnancy rate for the area at 20 percent as compared to the state at 10 percent, the fraternity is devoting a lot of efforts towards bringing these numbers down.

Presenters for the conference will be chapter members and members of local community organizations. Topics to be covered during the conference sessions include: abstinence and consequences of early sexual activity, peer pressure, HIV/AIDS, teen pregnancy, STDs, relationships, being a responsible father and what it means to “be a man.”

The conference seeks to create a safe environment where young men can learn about and explore their sexuality, manhood and relationship issues. The conference’s three goals are: sharing knowledge, changing attitudes and creating a sense of empowerment and self-esteem.

“The men of Alpha Phi Alpha are committed to helping the next generation of young men live healthy, productive and smart lives,” local chapter president Joseph Bumbrey said. “This conference is just one way that can continue changing our communities for the better, from the inside out.”
