A shooting the week before Christmas left one juvenile injured and resulted in the arrest of three suspects.

On Dec. 19 at approximately 4 p.m., officers responded to shooting on 4th Avenue where they found a 16-year-old female wounded from a gunshot.

“Upon the officer’s arrival, they found a 16-year-old juvenile that had been shot in the left arm,” Selma Chief of Police William T. Riley said. “The juvenile was transported to the local hospital for treatment.”

During the preliminary investigation, detectives learned that the juvenile victim was walking in the area of 4th Avenue with a friend when a Honda Accord being driven by a female appeared in the area and shots came from the vehicle towards the victim.

“One bullet struck the victim in the arm and another struck a vehicle being driven by a 17-year-old,” Riley said.

The female who was driving the car was later identified as 20-year-old Jakaira J. Smitherman. Two black males, both juveniles, in the Honda Accord began to shoot at the victim.

The investigation led to three arrests made on Dec. 20.

Police arrested Clarence S. Brown, 17, for assault 1st, discharging a firearm into an occupied vehicle. Brown is a juvenile but he is being charged as an adult with a $515,000 bond.

Jakaira J. Smitherman, 20, is charged with assault 1st and discharging a firearm into an occupied vehicle and being held on a $515,000.

Another male juvenile, 15, is charged with assault 1st and discharging a firearm into an occupied vehicle. His detention is pending upon a hearing this week.
