Derrick Williams, 18, and JaQuenton Craft, 21, were arrested by the Selma Police Department Saturday in connection with a robbery that occurred Dec. 7 in the 1800 block of Green Street. Both are currently in the Dallas County Jail under a $100,000 bond.
Selma Chief of Police William T. Riley said the two suspects from Atmore, reportedly broke in to a dorm room of a Concordia student, strangled the victim and stole $2,100.
“Evidently [the victim] had some acquaintance with them and they came into the room and one started choking him while another removed money out of his pocket and wallet,” Riley said. The victim was left with no serious injuries. “This is what we call a ‘strong-armed’ robbery,” Riley said.
After identifying two of the three suspects in the incident, Riley said a warrant was issued and the Atmore Police Department was notified. Both were charged with 2nd degree robbery, which is a class B felony, Riley said.
While Williams and Craft remain in custody, a warrant is out for the third suspect, Tavares White.
“We’ve issued a warrant for him and notified that locality of the incident,” Riley said.
As of now, the motive of the crime is unknown but Riley said it is suspected that the victim and three suspects were acquainted in some fashion.
“We’re not really sure of the full motive right now,” he said. “They may have known each other, there may be something there that we’re unaware about.”
Since all three suspects are over the age of 18, Riley said they could be looking at possible jail time.
“No guns or weapons were involved,” Riley said. “But this is a felony, so they could be looking at some serious penalties.”
