The good hearts of Selma residents prevailed this holiday season rewarding the Salvation Army with yet another successful red kettle program. After tallying all red kettle-ringing stations, the program brought in close to $39,000.

“I was really impressed with all the money that was raised,” said Major Steve Welch of the Salvation Army.

Welch said more than 500 volunteered to ring bells outside the several locations in Dallas County. Church, ROTC and business groups were among the many that raised money for the worthy cause.

“The money will go in to our general operating to help us make it through the year when donations are slimmer,” Welch said. “This is our biggest grossing fundraiser.”

Last year the program brought in closer to $40,000 but Welch said he was still impressed with this year’s total.

“There was a crosssection of the community who volunteered,” he said, adding he was surprised by how many people volunteered on an individual basis.

The Angel Tree program was also a success this year, Welch said.

“I was really impressed with it and the radio station helped us greatly with that too,” he said.

Thanks to many individuals and businesses who adopted angels, Welch said many less fortunate children had a brighter Christmas.

“ A lot of people came by the office and adopted angels or went to the library,” he said. “We were really thankful for everyone who did that.”

And although the Red Kettle and Angel Tree programs have come to a close there’s still ways to help the Salvation Army.

“We need volunteers all year round,” Welch said. “People can donate to the store or bring canned goods to the food pantry.”
