As the weeks before the annual Bridge Crossing Jubilee begin to close in, chairman Sam Walker said the final touches are being made and residents can expect a final schedule to be released by Tuesday.
Jubilee, which will begin Thursday, Feb. 28 and conclude on Monday, March 4 with the march to Montgomery, will host an array of events that are sure to attract people of all ages, Walker said.
One event that has been set in stone, and Walker said he is looking forward to, are the gospel performances that will be held Saturday, March 2 during the Jubilee Festival, held in the School of Discovery parking lot.
Gospel singers Luther Bares and Paul Porter will be performing beginning at 11 a.m. alongside a hip-hop artist and R&B performer. Tickets for the festival are $12 in advance and $15 at the gate.
A battle of the bands will also be held March 2 in the School of Discovery parking lot beginning at 11:30 a.m.
“There will also be several workshops throughout the week that should be very interesting and informative,” Walker said.
Several workshops will be held Saturday that discuss topics of workers’ rights, immigration laws, spiritual power of black history and many other issues. All workshops will be held at the St. James Hotel, 1200 Water Ave.
Also on Saturday, a Jubilee golf tournament, sponsored by Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, will be held at the Valley Grande Golf Course, 1009 Warrior Drive. Breakfast and registration begins at 6:30 a.m.
These are just a few events to look forward to, Walker said.
“We continue to struggle and that’s why we do this every year,” he said.
The main event, which if, of course, is the march to Montgomery, will be Monday, March 4 in front of Brown Chapel Church at 1:30 p.m. All are invited and encouraged to participate.
“It’s shaping up to be a large crowd this year and I look forward to seeing who all comes out,” Walker said. “We’re expecting tremendous numbers from people around the country.”
