As she works through her senior year at Southside High School, Ashley Cunningham approaches the end of a busy four years.

And while she said it’s been a fun experience, she added it’s been filled with challenges that have translated into lessons.

“I’m involved in a lot of activities. I’m in the Beta Club, the National Honor Society and play basketball,” Cunningham said. “I’m one of the top students here. It’s been a good experience, but it’s been a little rocky at times. Just being a strong individual, knowing my limits and knowing what I need to do to get where I want to be has helped a lot.”

Her high school years are something she’ll look back on fondly, but Cunningham is determined to get started on her future.

Cunningham already knows her plan and what she wants to be as she pursues her future goals.

“I plan to attend [Auburn University-Montgomery] on a scholarship, and while there I plan to major in accounting and play basketball,” Cunningham said. “I know they have a great program because my auntie recently graduated with a business degree in accounting. I believe going there should help me out a lot.”

Cunningham’s interest in becoming an accountant comes from an interest in mathematics.

While many are terrified by the very thought of equations, formulas and fractions, Cunningham sees the world of math and the journey she’ll take in accounting as just another challenge.

“I love math. Some people say it’s hard, but I find it to be very intriguing,” Cunningham said. “It stimulates my mind and challenges me. Everywhere you go, you need some form of math to help you out, especially if you’re going to be dealing with money.”

Ultimately, Cunningham hopes to apply her talents into running a business that could help all.

“Hopefully, I’ll be somewhere in a big city with my own business of some sort,” Cunningham said. “Everywhere I go, I know people are going to need an accountant.”
