Miss Mable Clair Smith

Miss Mable Clair Smith, 101, of Selma, died Monday, March 11th, 2013.

Family visitation will be held at 10:00 a.m. followed by services to be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, March 16th, at Our Lady Queen of Peace Catholic Church, Selma, Alabama, with Father Stephen Hornat, S.S.E. officiating. Burial will follow at New Live Oak Cemetery with Lawrence Funeral Home directing.

Miss Smith was preceded in death by her parents, Samuel W. Smith and Mary Virginia Kearney Smith; her brothers, James Joseph Smith and John Randolph Smith; and her sister Minnie Kathleen Smith.

Survivors include nephews, James Joseph (Gwen) Smith, II of Baton Rouge, LA, Samuel W. (Kay) Smith, II of Mobile, AL, John Randolph (Cora) Smith, Jr. of Selma, AL and William Craig Smith of Foley, AL; nieces, Janice Smith (Joel) Newsom of Suwanee, GA and Page Smith (Peter) Poerschke of Birmingham, AL; great-nephews, John Randolph (Kayla) Smith, III of Selma, AL, Frank E. Roper, III of Woodstock, GA, and Robert L. Gandy of Olympia, WA; great-nieces, Page A. Poerschke (Randall Pitts) of Birmingham, AL, Mabry Virginia Poerschke of Birmingham, AL, Brennan Smith of Mobile, AL, Laura M. Smith of New Castle, PA, and Kristen Leigh Smith of Baton Rouge, LA; five great-great-nephews; special friends, Ruth Roberts, Emily Rust and Eleanor Clark; friend and caregiver Fannie L. Reese; caregiver Wornzie Shannon, and her “Extended Family” – the Residents and Staff of Cedar Hill Assisted Living Facility and her fellow volunteers at Vaughan Regional Medical Center.

Born in Selma on December 29, 1911, Miss Smith worked as a bookkeeper for Stewart, King and McKenzie for 28 years, and then as a bookkeeper for Selma Wholesale Grocery for 22 years. After retiring, she accumulated thousands of volunteer hours as a hospital “Pink Lady” and enjoyed walking two miles everyday.

In lieu of flowers the family suggests memorials to the Queen of Peace Catholic Church Building Fund, the Cedar Hill Assisted Living Activity Fund or a favorite charity.
