Selma All-Stars win District 4 crown

Selma’s 14-year-old Dixie Boys All-Stars pounded out 36 runs in two games Monday night to win the District 4 championship and advance to the state tournament beginning July 17 in Eufala.

Selma beated previously undefeated Millbrook 16-6 and 20-6 in a five-inning game for the crown.

After a four-hit, four-run first inning, Selma batted around in the second inning for nine more runs. The game was called after five innings because of the mercy rule.

Leading the hitting for Selma were Wes Tipton with a home run, a double and a single; Dylan Lawrence with a home run and two singles; Donta Cleveland with a double and two singles; and Joey Raybon with a single and a triple. Ethan Fancer added two singles and Eddie Thigpen had a single.

Austin Anderson picked up the crucial victory on the mound.

Selma used a five-run sixth inning — highlighted by Rabon’s two-run home run to left field — to take a 14-6 lead over Millbrook in Monday’s first game.

Selma trailed 2-1 before scoring four runs in the top of the third inning for a 5-2 lead. Millbrook closed the gap to 5-4 with two unearned run in the bottom of the third.

With two more runs each in the fourth and fifth innings, Selma held a 9-4 lead. Two more Millbrook runs in the fifth inning on four hits gave Selma a 9-6 lead.

After the five-run sixth inning, Selma added two more runs in the seventh for the 16-6 final.

Raybon added a single to his home run. Anderson and Thigpen each had two singles, followed by Tipton with a double, and a single each from starting pitcher Crawford Traylor, Cleveland and Hunter Veach.

Selma pounded out nine hits in the first game.

In the District 4 13-year-olds tournament, Millbrook took two games from Prattville 6-4 and 8-3 to move on to the state tournament July 17 in Dothan.
