Selma all-stars live to fight another game

After a 16-6 drubbing of previously unbeaten Millbrook, Selma’s 14-year-old Dixie Boys All-Stars needed one more victory late Monday for the District 4 title and to advance to the state tournament.

Selma used a five-run sixth inning — highlighted by Joey Rabon’s two-run home run to left field — to take a 14-6 lead over Millbrook in Monday’s first game.

Selma trailed 2-1 before scoring four runs in the top of the third inning for a 5-2 lead. Millbrook closed the gap to 5-4 with two unearned run in the bottom of the third.

With two more runs each in the fourth and fifth innings, Selma held a 9-4 lead. Two more Millbrook runs in the fifth inning on four hits gave Selma a 9-6 lead.

After the five-run sixth inning, Selma added two more runs in the seventh for the 16-6 final.

Raybon added a single to his home run. Austin Anderson and Eddie Thigpen each had two singles, followed by Wes Tipton with a double, and a single each from starting pitcher Crawford Traylor, Donta Cleveland and Hunter Veach.

Selma pounded out nine hits in the first game.

The winner of Monday’s late game advances to the state tournament July 17 in Eufala.

In the 13-year-old All-Stars game Monday night at the Selma Softball Complex, Millbrook defeated Prattville 6-4 to force a one-game playoff in the late game.
