Some of Selma’s most talented young artists will have the opportunity to display their paintings and drawings Sunday at the Selma Art Guild from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m.
Jo Pate, executive director for the art guild, located at 508 Selma Ave., said the Dallas County Student Art Show is the perfect time for area students to come together with their families and show them the artwork they’ve created.
“It’s a wonderful opportunity for parents and grandparents to be able to recognize their children’s creativity,” Pate said.
More than 10 Dallas County schools will be represented in the show with more than 150 works on display. Children ranging from kindergarten to 12th grade participated submitted drawings and paintings for the art show.
After family members browse all the artworks, Pate said first, second and third place winners will be announced.
“Some of it is really phenomenal,” Pate said of the artwork. “And when you think that students as young as elementary school age created this art work — you will be really impressed.”
Pate said the art show was developed as a way to expose local children to the arts. With recent budget cuts, Pate said art classes are often the first programs to be eliminated in schools.
“When these children found out about the art show, they were grinning from ear to ear,” Pate said. “It just does something wonderful for them to see something that they’ve created shown in public. They can say ‘that’s mine.’”
And other than the sheer appreciation of having their artwork on display, Pate said winners will receive “a little extra something for their hard work.” The first place winner will receive $50, second will get $25 and third $10.
“This encourages children to develop creativity and it’s a fun time to see people and spend time with family,” Pate said. “We’re adding some fabulous artists to the community, that’s for sure.”
