Selma High School Class of 2013 valedictorian Andrenekia Milhouse broke down in tears during her address to her class at graduation when speaking about how much she will miss her hometown and high school. But despite her tears, Milhouse said she is no doubt, excited about what lies for her future ahead and going on to the next chapter after Selma.

This summer, Millhouse will complete her core classes at Wallace Community College Selma.

As for the fall, when she steps onto the campus of Alabama State in Montgomery, she will be walking into to study her major as a first-semester freshman.

The daughter of Barbara Young and Frederick Milhouse, she wants to study health information management because she said she is organized and has an interest in technology and computer networks. She hopes this field of study will combine those talents of hers to where she can contribute to the health and wellness of others in some way, while also having a fulfilling career incorporating her favorite subjects from Selma High — math and science.

“I will miss most some of my teachers because they were just really easy to communicate with and I know when I get to college I might not have that,” Milhouse said.

She credited her grandmother, Estella Morrow, and her mentor, Ghytana Goings, for pushing her to excel and earn the title as valedictorian and explained Goings was one who, “really inspired me and was always checking on me in school because she works at Wallace” and was involved in her dual enrollment and early college experiences. Goings teaches math, and Milhouse said Goings is the reason she understands it so well and loves it so much.

Milhouse was involved in Selma’s Student Government Association and National Honors Society, and is an active member of Gospel Tabernacle Church of God and Christ.

She said her fondest memories of Selma High include class activities out of the classroom and activities with friends.

“I loved going to parties. Also the time our class went out to Bloch Park for the day [were my favorite] memories,” Milhouse said, noting the Award’s Day at school was also a time for smiles in the school. “My wish for Selma High next year is that they create more [extra-curricular] activities.”

Milhouse said she is most excited about moving away from home while attending ASU, but said she will be back to visit quite often.
