MARION — Jonathan Carlisle, a graduate of Francis Marion High School, was recently selected for the Gates Millennium Scholars Program, which awards a scholarship used to pursue a degree in any undergraduate major at the accredited college or university of the recipient’s choice.
Carlisle, who served as salutatorian of his class, graduated with a 3.86 grade point average, a 26 on his ACT and served in many leadership roles throughout high school including president of Future Business Leaders of America, National Honor Society member, student-actor at Judson College’s Arts-in-Residence Department and several others.
He credits his participating in the arts program as key to his development of his leadership skills and success in school.
Carlisle plans to attend Morehouse College in Atlanta in the fall to pursue his undergraduate degree in history and political science.
In a press release, Carlisle said he desires to serve and help others — especially those who are challenged by circumstances and situations beyond their control. He was active in assisting victims of the 2011 tornado outbreak in the town of Tishabee.
Through publishing their needs, Carlisle was able to raise support around the county and personally participated in the collection and distribution of items.
