Women from a range of age groups tried out some new facial products Thursday in the Vaughan Meeting Room at the Selma-Dallas County public Library. They tried out facial cleansers and toners with cotton swabs and learned new techniques for applying eye shadow — all part of new summer programming at the library aimed at teens and adults.

Crystal Drye with the library staff said because children are usually the focus of summer programming at the library, they wanted to create programs for a different age group.

“If we start to have more success with these programs for teens and adults then we will start planning more of them,” Drye said. “We just thought that during the summer if there are parents home with their teens, they are probably looking for something to do. We wanted to create programs for that age group in addition to all of the activities we have for children every day during the summer.”

The result was several scheduled programs every Thursday at 2 p.m. for the month of June. They had a successful jewelry-making program and all seats were booked for a program with Regena Holmes who taught library patrons about proper skin care.

“Be a friend to your skin,” Holmes said to several teenage girls and middle-aged women, all who came to learn about ways to get radiant skin. “I decided to share what I have learned about skincare because just over the years multiple people have approached me and asked me how I do my makeup.”

She showed the women techniques on properly cleansing their faces and explained the different layers of the skin, to give them a better understanding of why cleaning and habits are important to staying healthy.

Women took notes and asked her questions and at the end of the seminar, several tried on new makeup looks.

“It was really a good refresher for makeup,” Cynthia Graves said, who was at the library with her teenage daughter when they heard about the program and decided to stick around. The two were the perfect age group for whom the library said they are trying to cater to with the new programs.

The next event will be a seminar on making paper blooms from every day objects. Drye said those attend will learn how to make craft decorations from things in the home such as coffee filters, wire hangers and more.
