Morgan Academy continued its preparation for football season at Huntingdon College Monday and Tuesday, where lineman participated in camps and skill position players played 7-on-7 games.
Head coach Bob Taylor was impressed with the progress his team showed.
“When we started yesterday morning, we had 15 possessions and scored on 13 out of the 15, so it was really good. It was really fast- paced,” Taylor said. “The tempo was perfect. Kids [were] understanding the route concepts. They’ve really improved.”
Taylor said his offense moved the ball well throughout the day Monday and Tuesday. He said he can see a big difference between where his team was in its first offseason 7-on-7 at Hooper Academy and where the Senators are after their two-day camp at Huntingdon.
“We were talking about it this afternoon, about how much better we’ve gotten since we played that first day in our secondary play and our passing game,” Taylor said.
Taylor said the most impressive thing about his offense’s showing was that the Senators were scoring on crossing routes where the quarterbacks and receivers had to make the right read and be on the same page.
On the other side of the football, Taylor said his players are starting to understand their where they belong against multiple formations
“Defensively, I’m seeing a lot of improvement from them as far as their drops, where they need to get for coverage and breaking on the ball,” Taylor said.
While the skill position players were playing 7-on-7, the Morgan Academy lineman were participating in drills with other teams and learning from Huntingdon coaches.
“The lineman got a lot of exposure with the college coaches at Huntingdon showing them some things,” Taylor said.
Overall, Taylor said his team showed a lot of improvement during two days at the camp, saying the Senators “got a lot out of it.”
Other teams participating in the camp included St. Jude, Carver, Alabama Christian, Trinity, Childersburg, and Sumiton Christian.
