One councilman is hosting a social event to help send Selma students to school with all the supplies they need — whether they can afford them or not.
Ward 8 representative Michael Johnson will host the Teacher Time Out benefit Saturday, Aug. 17 at 8 p.m., which will allow adults to mingle and raise money for a local cause. The event, to be held at the Selma Avenue Sports Bar and Grill, will give teachers, school faculty and other adults the opportunity to socialize before the new school year.
“I just really see so many people in our community struggling to make sure the kids have what they need to go back to school and I want to do something to help everybody,” Johnson said of the event. “The Teacher Time Out this Saturday will help to make sure that more teachers and students in our community have exactly what they need to make this a very successful school year.”
The Teacher Time Out will offer adults an upscale social experience. Parents, teachers, school staff and elected officials are encouraged to come out and support the community-building event.
“We thought it would be a great idea to offer teachers and parents some time to have a little fun before school starts on Monday,” Johnson revealed.
The Teacher Time Out will feature indoor and outdoor activities along with a live DJ and door prizes.
Johnson is an entrepreneur and business owner when not sitting in the council chambers. He said he wants area children to have the same opportunities he did and said he knows there can be distractions in the classroom, but kids worried about borrowing paper, pencils and other supplies should not be one of them.
