Selma police officers have arrested Anthony Dorsey, 44, and charged him with several traffic violations, attempted theft of property in the second degree and resisting arrest.

Officers took Dorsey into custody Monday as a suspect after someone reported a person stealing copper from a building in the 1100 block of Voeglin Avenue.

Police Sgt. Doug Stewart said when officers approached Dorsey he drove away.

“Officers gave pursuit until the offender stopped the vehicle and then attempted to flee on foot,” Stewart said.

Florida Smith was a passenger in the car and told officers Dorsey had opened her car door as she stopped and took her vehicle without her permission with her still inside.

Officers investigated Smith’s statement and discovered it was false. She was arrested and charged with false reporting to police officers. Smith was released on $500 bond from the City Processing Center.

Dorsey was released on $3,500 bond from the county jail.
