Following a week-long pardon for all the animals on site, the Central Alabama Animal Shelter hosted a special adoption event Saturday at their facility on Medical Center Parkway.
Shannon Lynch, who has been volunteering at the CAAS for a year-and-a-half, said Wednesday the last few weeks have been nothing short of incredible.
“Saturday was just amazing,” Lynch said “I was very surprised by the number of local people who turned out to show their support.”
Lynch said that nine dogs and three cats were adopted on Saturday, and several dozen have either been sent, or will soon be sent, to rescues around the state and country.
Shane Smith, who founded PAWS for Hope and Faith, worked with city leaders to pass the pardon, will continue to work with the city and it’s shelter to find homes for all the animals.
Before Saturday’s event, Smith outlined his goals for the event.
“My personal goal is to always get them all out,” Smith said. “But our main objective is to raise awareness for the community and get the dogs and cats in a better situation than they are now.”
Even though Smith is no longer in town, Lynch said the shelter will continue to work with him through phone calls and emails.
Yet, while many dogs found a new home over the last week, Lynch said the shelter still needs Selma residents to provide temporary homes for the remaining dogs.
“The most important thing I can ask for now, is for people to foster our animals,” Lynch said. “It doesn’t matter if it’s for two days, two weeks or whatever,” Lynch said.
