PLANTERSVILLE — In Beulah’s 14-6 win over Dallas County Friday night, sloppy offensive perfomrnaces by each team left both head coaches looking for answers.

Beulah picked up their first win and sit at 1-2 and 1-1 in the region. Dallas County also sits at 1-2, but is 0-2 in the region after two straight losses.

The Bobcats scored first on a on a 67-yard drive when senior running back Dustin Howard took the ball into the endzone on a one yard run with 6:20 left in the first quarter.

The remainder of the first half was a struggle offensively for both teams.

Dallas County drove into the redzone twice in the first half, but failed to convert both times.

Dallas County nearly scored on a three-yard run by Prince Tolbert Jr. in the second quarter. It was called back on a holding penalty. The Hornets lost their scoring shot immediately after when Tolbert fumbled the ball on a third and goal from the 14-yard line.

At half, Dallas County head coach Barry Colburn said he was disappointed with his teams offensive performance.

“We got off to a bad start, we have to concentrate a lot harder,” Colburn said.

Dallas County’s offense began to wake up when Tolbert tossed the ball to his junior running back Scott Cole Jr., who flung the ball 26 yards to senior tight end Justin Chandler.

The Hornets scored with 3:49 in the third quarter when senior wide receiver Rickey Smith hauled in an 18-yard pass for a touchdown.

Dallas County missed the extra point, which kept Beulah in the lead, 7-6.

Things went downhill from there for the Hornets. Beulah intercepted the ball three times in the second half and dealt the final blow with 1:18 left in the game on a nine-yard touchdown run by Trevon Brown.

The loss may have greater implications for Dallas County.

Seconds before Beulah’s final touchdown, Tolbert was injured when dropping back for a pass. Tolbert was sacked at the 20-yard line and complained of shoulder pain after making his way to the sideline.

It wasn’t pretty, but Beulah head coach Jarrod Wooten said he was satisfied with the victory.

“An ugly win is always better than a pretty loss,” Wooten said. “It’s huge for us because we have had adversity and injuries. Our defense kept us in the game we just had to fight and continue to come back.”

Next week Dallas County plays Handley High School in Roanoke
