Crossfit athletes prepare for Pensacola Beach event

Three local Selma Crossfit participants are a little nervous about what they might be doing once they get to Pensacola for their first ever Crossfit competition, but as the Sept. 28 event draws closer excitement is building.
When Megan Crane, Chelsea Chamberlain and Jami Horne get to the Pensacola Beach Brawl, they aren’t sure what they will be doing. Crossfit, unlike other sports or workout routines, trains athletes in all areas, meaning the competitions are open to all kinds of events.
“It is something different every single day. We never do the same workout,” Crane said about her workouts at Selma Crossfit. “It is challenging. You have days where you feel like you can’t finish the workout, but at the same time you can’t wait to get out here the next day and do it all over again.”
Crane and Chamberlain went to a Crossfit competition in Alabaster to watch, hoping to get a sneak peak at what they might be asked to do when they get to Pensacola.
Watching a previous competition was a big help though, Chamberlain said.
“After watching our first competition, we were able to bring it back here and somewhat have the same routine and incorporate that into our workout,” Chamberlain said. “Before that, we were unsure how a competition works. We’ve had several days where we’ve come out and trained together as if we were in a competition outside of just our normal workout days.”
The jitterbugs will also be affecting Crane.
“I’m really nervous about this first one because I have never done anything like this before,” Crane said. “It is something I want to keep doing because I love it.”
Chamberlain, who also admits to being a little nervous going into her first competition, said she wants to see how she matches up with other athletes from other Crossfit gyms.
“Not only being on the beach, but learning from those that have done numerous competitions and competing against them and seeing where we actually stand,” Chamberlain said when asked what she was looking forward to about the competition.
Dr. Louis McMillon, who runs Selma Crossfit, is ready to see how the athletes from his gym do in the competition.
“There will probably be 500-600 athletes there,” McMillon said. “These people have probably been working out for years because you are going to send your best. It’s really brutal.”
McMillon said any age group can do Crossfit. He has had an 89-year-old lady participate in Crossfit and he also has middle schoolers participating. Anyone interested in Crossfit can call 407-8898 for more information.
