A week ago, the players and coaches at Concordia College were simply focused on how to stop an embarrassing two game losing skit that saw the Hornets blown out in each of their first two games.

The game last Saturday against Miles was a close game for the Hornets, a simple bus ride up to Fairfield Saturday afternoon. Well, that’s how it started.

In a rural part of Perry County, one of the charter buses experienced a blown tire that then kicked off a chain of events that led to the ultimate destruction of the bus and everything on board. Thankfully no one on board was injured.

But, what was injured — rather lost — was the team’s ability to play a game, as all of the team’s equipment was aboard that bus. Helmets, pants, pads, camera equipment, etc. were all destroyed.

Needless to say, last Saturday’s game was canceled and the Hornets’ season was in jeopardy.

But, as word spread of the tragedy, the list of those chipping in to help erupted. Aid came from nearly every corner of the country; from individuals making monetary donations, to large companies like Rawlings and Adidas shipping equipment.

In the end, the Hornets were able to play in Thursday’s game against the University of West Alabama. And although the scoreboard once again detailed a tough loss for the Hornets, the fact they were there, that they competed and yes, that they were all dressed the same way, was a victory no one could have expected less than a week ago.

Now, it’s a new week and it just so happens to be homecoming week for Concordia. A parade, a game and other festivities will take place to celebrate the school and its students.

It is an opportunity for all of us — Concordia alumnus or not — to come out and show our support.

Take the time to come to Memorial Stadium next Saturday for the Hornets’ homecoming game and enjoy the game, the great band and all of the festivities.

This season has been marred by tough losses and near tragedy, let’s make sure their next game is remembered for a great crowd.
